File # 2023-29550

At approximately 4:45 PM on Thursday August 24, 2023, police responded to a report of a 10-year old child who had been riding his bicycle when he was struck by two motor vehicles. When police arrived on scene, bystanders and fire crews were providing emergency first aid to the youth. The incident occurred near the intersection of Howard Ave and Nova St.

Officers spoke with several witnesses and the drivers involved and reviewed dashcam footage. It appears the youth was riding his bicycle down a steep driveway, when suddenly he rode on to Howard Ave and was struck by a southbound vehicle. The child was then struck by a second vehicle proceeding north bound on Howard Ave. Both drivers stopped, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. While only preliminary, speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors on part of the drivers involved.

The youth was airlifted to a hospital in Victoria with serious potentially life-threatening injuries. The intersection was closed for several hours while investigators, including an RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst, examined the scene and collected forensic evidence. RCMP Victim Services were contacted and are engaged.

The investigation continues.
