Kitimat RCMP weekly report March 21st - March 27th, 2024

Lost, found, returned ID and bank card:

An anonymous person attended the Kitimat RCMP detachment on March 21st and turned in an ID and bank card that they had found within the community. The investigating officer attempted to locate the owner of the items. The following day the owner made contact and the items were able to be returned. (2024-939)

Prohibited driver:

While conducting proactive patrols along the Kitimat River Dyke road during the evening of March 22nd, a Kitimat RCMP officer conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle. During the stop it was found the driver was prohibited from driving Canada wide. The driver was arrested for driving while prohibited. The driver was released on an appearance notice to attend court on a future date to answer to the charge. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days. (2024-954)

Insecure business:

While conducting foot patrols in the 200 block of City Centre on March 23rd, a Kitimat RCMP office located an insecure business. The business was checked and there appeared to be no issues. Attempts to contact staff was made. The business was secured and the officer continued their patrols. (2024-963)

Concern for elderly pedestrian:

The Kitimat RCMP received a call from a concerned citizen regarding an elderly pedestrian walking through a Whitesail neighbourhood on March 24th. The investigating officer attended and located the pedestrian. The elderly pedestrian was in good health but assisted home by the officer. (2024-977)

Trespass ticket:

A Kitimat RCMP officer was made aware of a possible shoplifting incident at a local business on March 25th. The offender was identified, however there was not enough evidence to proceed with a criminal code charge of theft. It was found that the offender had previously been served a trespass notice. As a result, they were issued a $115 violation ticket under the Trespass Act. (2024-984)

Mischief to vehicle:

The Kitimat RCMP received a report of a mischief to a vehicle that was parked on the 300 block of Haisla Ave on March 27th. An unknown person had poured a red substance onto the vehicle overnight. While cleaning the vehicle. Some scratches were also located. A CCTV canvas was done of the area. A suspect has not been identified. (2024-1002)

Cause a disturbance:

A report of a disturbance being caused on the 200 block of City Centre was received by the Kitimat RCMP at approximately 3:30 pm on March 27th. The investigation Kitimat RCMP officers attended and located an intoxicated male. The male was arrested for causing a disturbance by being intoxicated in public and was lodge in the Kitimat RCMP cells. He was released without charge once sober. (2024-1004)

Slow down, move over:

The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind drivers, in British Columbia, motorists are required to slow down and move over for all vehicles stopped alongside the road that have flashing red, blue or yellow lights. This includes maintenance workers, utility workers, police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement personnel, land surveyors, animal control workers, garbage collectors and other roadside workers.

Motorists must slow their speed to:
70km/h when in an 80km/h or over zone
40km/h when in an under 80km/h zone

If travelling on a multi-lane road, drivers must move into another lane to pass when passing stopped vehicles with a flashing light, where safe to do so. This provides roadside workers and emergency personnel with greater protection from accident and injury. Drivers failing to adjust their speed or failing to move over may receive a $173 traffic violation ticket that also carries 3 penalty points.
