UPDATE: Second arrest made in motel explosion
File # 2024-525
Beginning on February 10, 2024, Trail and Greater District RCMP began a search for 33-year-old Ryan Harp of Grand Forks, BC, in an alleged connection to an explosion on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at a motel in Trail, BC.
Trail RCMP received assistance from the Southeast District Emergency Response Team and Southeast District General Investigation Section to locate and arrest Harp without risk to the public on Friday, February 23, 2024.
Harp is being held in police custody and is charged the following alleged criminal offences:
- Criminal Harassment contrary to Section 264 CC
- Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose contrary to Section 88(1) CC
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm contrary to Section 91(1) CC
- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon contrary to Section 91(2) CC
- Mischief Endangering Life contrary to Section 430(2) CC
- Storing Firearms Contrary to Regulations contrary to Section 86(2) CC
- Fail to Comply with a Probation Order x 3 contrary to Section 733.1(1) CC
Trail RCMP continues to make this investigation a top priority. The partnership between Trail RCMP, SED ERT, GIS, and other RCMP detachments who contributed resulted in the Harp’s capture. Without this cooperation and resourcing, this arrest would have proven much more difficult and danger for Trail officers alone," says Sgt. Wicentowich.

Hiker stuck on local cliffside
File # 2024-673
On Friday, February 23, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report about a 17-year-old Trail youth stuck on a cliffside near Sunningdale, BC.
The youth reported to his mother via cellphone that he had become stuck after the weather and rock conditions took a turn for the worse. He assessed that he was unable to safely climb out of his location without risking serious injury due to the slippery rock conditions. His mother contacted police for assistance.
Trail RCMP contacted Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue who were able to extracted the youth using High Angle Rope Rescue techniques and equipment.
The youth was transported to hospital for treatment of dehydration and hypothermia.
I would like to commend the youth for making a proper risk assessment at the time and contacting help. He realized he was stuck in a bad spot and it wasn’t safe to continue. He made the right call and received help getting out of his predicament. We rather have someone call and come home safe then have a tragedy," says Sgt. Wicentowich
