Two incidents of impaired driving in Rossland, BC

File # 2023-1167

On Friday, March 17, 2023, at 10:50 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting a routine patrol when he observed a 30-year-old Rossland man drift his 1999 red Ford F150 around a corner from Highway 3B onto Columbia Avenue, in Rossland, BC. The officer detained the man and his truck roadside.

The officer made observations that led him to believe the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. The officer entered into an investigation. The officer read a demand to the man who provided a sample of breath roadside that resulted in a fail.

The 30-year-old Rossland man was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under section 215 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act and had his vehicle impounded for up to 30 days.
The man really slid himself into this situation. says Sgt. Wicentowich

Suspicious deaths of family dogs

On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 9:31 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District officer responded to the suspicious deaths of two family dogs in the 4000 block of Casino Road, in Trail, BC. The owners and their dogs lived within close proximity to each other and the dogs were occasional playmates. Both dogs were reported to have roamed in the area and on their own large properties.

On Sunday, March 19, one owner, a 42-year-old Trail woman, found her dog deceased in her yard. The cause of death was not confirmed at this time. On Monday, March 20, the same 42-year-old Trail woman saw her deceased dog’s playmate eating a piece of meat in her yard. It was commonplace for this dog to visit her dog to play. Before she could intervene, the playmate ran off. A short time later, the playmate’s owner discovered his dog convulsing on his property before rushing it to the local veterinarian hospital. Unfortunately, his dog died in transport despite his quick action and valiant efforts to save its life. His deceased dog underwent laboratory testing which confirmed the presence of Strychnine.

The officer concluded that the first dog had likely been poisoned with Strychnine as well. The officer believed an unknown person may have likely been illegally baiting coyotes with poisoned meat in an effort to kill the wild animals. This practice is common despite being illegal and dangerous to other animals.

The BC Conversation Office has been contacted about the incident.

Trail RCMP is looking for any information on the identity of the suspect who may be responsible for these two incidents. Anyone with information may call the Trail Detachment at 250-364-2566 to speak to an investigation.

Trail RCMP recommends that all dogs be kept inside, leashed, or fenced to discourage roaming in the area to prevent poisoning as the investigation continues to unfold. says Sgt. Wicentowich
