One person has died following a fire at a residence in Kitimat, BC on January 19, 2023.

On January 19, 2023, The Kitimat RCMP responded to a report of a house fire in the 500 block of Columbia Ave West, Kitimat BC.

The Kitimat Fire Department was already on scene and fighting the blaze which has engulfed the entire structure.

Two occupants were able to get out of the residence, suffering fire related injuries and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

"Unfortunately, one occupant was unable to make it out and was later located in the residence deceased," says Sergeant Rob Gardner, Acting Detachment Commander for the Kitimat RCMP. "We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. The Kitimat RCMP victims' services have been engaged with the family."

The investigation is still on going with the assistance of the Regional General Investigation section, the Kitimat Fire Department, and the Office of the Fire Commission.

The BC Coroners Service is also conducting a concurrent fact-finding investigation into this unexpected death. Due to the privacy of the deceased, under the Coroners Act, the deceased’s name will not be released.
