Terrace RCMP warn against recent phone scams

The Terrace RCMP are warning the community to be aware of recent phone scams that have been reported where the fraudster claims to be with BC Hydro.

On November 9, 2022, two separate reports were made of phone calls received from a caller claiming to be from BC Hydro and stating that their accounts were in arrears and that payment was due right away or their hydro would be disconnected.

In both cases the fraudster directed people to make payments by going to certain locations.
BC Hydro has warned that there has been an increase in scams due to the COVID -19 pandemic. Its customers should be aware that BC Hydro will not collect credit card or bank account information over the phone, by text or email. The company also does not accept payment from pre-paid cash or credit cards, or bitcoin ATM.

If a customer is in doubt of the authenticity of a phone call, text or email, they should call BC Hydro at 1-800-224-9376 or check their MyHydro account online.
