On Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 7:39 pm, New Hazelton RCMP conducted a traffic stop along Highway 16, east of Gitsegukla. When police stopped the car, they observed two adult men inside.

The driver not have a valid driver’s license and was later issued a violation ticket for no driver’s license. While talking with the driver, police took note of several large garbage bags in the back seat. The driver told police that the bags contained cartons of cigarettes.

Upon closer examination of the cigarettes, police found the bags contained non-government stamped cartons.

Cartons of cigarettes

Both men were released at the scene pending further investigation and could possibly face charges under the Tobacco Act. This is an excellent example of looking beyond the ticket and seeing the big picture. As a result, illegal cigarettes were found and seized, said S/Sgt Darren Durnin NCO i/c New Hazelton RCMP.
