On Sunday, July 18, 2021, at 8:58 pm, the Merritt RCMP, along with the Merritt Fire Department, Lower Nicola Fire Department and BC Wildfire Service attended seven fires on Highway 8, between Johnny’s on the Rez and Juniper Drive.

The fires are believed to have been sparked by a vehicle travelling through the area. The vehicle is described as an older model F150, rusted with pieces hanging off it. The vehicle drove from Aberdeen Drive in Lower Nicola East through Merritt.

The Merritt RCMP temporarily evacuated several houses out of an abundance of caution. There have been no reports of property damage. This could have ended much worse had the fires not been quickly extinguished said Sgt Joshua Roda, Operations NCO Merritt RCMP.

If you have any information related to the fires, the vehicle described above or dash cam footage in the area between 8:30PM and 9:15PM, please call the Merritt RCMP at (250) 378-4262 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
