Congratulations to the West Shore RCMP Community Policing Keep In Touch Program for winning the Goldstream Gazette Local Hero community award this year.

Everyday our K.I.T volunteers call 27 elderly people living in the West Shore to check in on them and see how they are doing. Some of the clients are as are old as 100 and live by themselves. Should they need help, or they don’t answer the phone call, K.I.T volunteers will notify their emergency contact or call upon one of our officers to check on them personally.

This program has spread to other communities served by the RCMP and we are very proud to have it established here in 2002. What’s touching about this program is the impact that the volunteers have on the senior’s. We get to know our seniors as they talk about their families and experiences in life," said Heather Allan, West Shore RCMP Community Policing K.I.T coordinator.

Every Christmas the K.I.T program delivers cookies and cards to the seniors and every Spring they are all invited to the annual K.I.T tea party where they get to meet each other along with our police officers, and the volunteers on the other side of the daily phone calls.

The dedication of the volunteers keeps the program running. After 20 years with K.I.T, our longest serving volunteer, Donna Ensor just retired from making daily phone calls last year.
