Photo of cut wire left behind by wire thieves

Heavy-gauge utility wire was stolen from two locations over the past week. One wire cut occurred in the area of the Mission Bridge around 5:30 am on February 23, while the other cut is believed to have occurred earlier that night in the area of Nelson Street and Gill Avenue. It appears that an angle grinder was used to cut the thick wire. A ladder would have been required to reach the wire, and a truck or large SUV would have been needed to transport the wire once it was cut. Anyone with information should contact police. Motorists or residents who see any suspicious activity near utility lines should also call police immediately.

Mission RCMP were called to the 10200 block of Sylvester Road in Hatzic shortly before 1:30 am on February 20, after the driver of a car there had called for a tow truck, but when the tow driver arrived, he found the driver was unresponsive. First responders had to smash the vehicle’s window to get the male out, and observed that he appeared to be impaired by liquor. He failed two roadside screening tests and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day vehicle impound.

A fire occurred on February 22 in the area of a homeless camp in a wooded area south of Wren Street. A long-time resident there had built a type of tree-house that he was using as his dwelling. The fire is believed to have started as a result of improper electrical wiring – powered through a generator, and was also affected by the type of materials used in the structure. The lone occupant suffered burns to his arms, legs and torso, and was transported to hospital.

On the morning of February 25, an older black pickup truck sped out of the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant in Mission, narrowly missing an employee walking through the parking lot. The truck then revved its engine, spun its tires in the parking lot, drove over a curb and fish-tailed as it drove off. A witness was able to get a photo of the truck. Mission RCMP located the truck later that day. The owner was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention, and his vehicle was impounded.

Staff at a senior living facility on 7th Avenue called police after a 54-year-old man, whom was not a resident at the home, entered the facility on the afternoon of February 24, was rambling to himself, took off all of his clothes, and began playing piano in one of the common areas while fully nude. An officer met with staff, whom were very concerned for the safety of the elderly residents there. The man initially appeared to be compliant with police, but then assaulted the officer without warning, and threw multiple chairs at the officer. Despite suffering a considerable head injury, the officer was able to get the man under control and took him into custody. The male was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital. The officer was treated at hospital and released later that day.
