The RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) was called to a house on Sylvester Road on February 12, after a woman residing there located a hand grenade while going through a family member’s effects. Fortunately, EDU was able to confirm that the grenade was inert and did not pose a danger. This is a good reminder that if you find any sort of potential explosive device, do not handle it, keep people away, and call police immediately. It’s not uncommon for people to find items such as old blasting caps, munitions, or firearms they are not familiar with. These can all pose a danger if handled improperly, and its best to call to be sure.

The driver of a Ford F450 was pulled over on the afternoon of February 13, after an officer behind him noticed the truck being driven erratically. Despite the driver having a mint in his mouth, the officer could smell liquor on his breath, and noticed other symptoms of impairment as well. The driver provided a breath sample and was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and a vehicle impound.

Three drivers were stopped for excessive speeding that week, and all received 7-day impounds. The first was on the morning of February 12, when a vehicle was observed to be travelling at 130 km/hr in the 80 km/hr zone on Lougheed Highway near Chester Street. In the same location that afternoon, another SUV was spotted travelling at 134 km/hr. Finally, on the morning of February 14, a car was stopped after travelling at 133 km/hr northbound across the Mission Bridge. Drivers are reminded that excessive speeding is defined as speeds over 40 km/hr above the speed limit, and doing so can result in a $368 fine and a vehicle impound. Most importantly, travelling at those speeds is simply dangerous, and significantly increases the chances of something going terribly wrong when another car changes lanes unexpectedly, an animal jumps out in front of you, or you just lose control because of the speed at which you are travelling.

On the evening of February 12, Mission RCMP received a report of a male whipping things in the 32500 block of Lougheed Highway. An officer attended and confirmed the person whom had been snapping the whip – the whipper snapper – was no longer in the area. Fortunately, with Mission being a smaller city, and your RCMP officers having a good knowledge of who’s who in town, this particular officer was aware of someone living nearby, whom had a history of using whips. The officer spoke with the male, who admitted he had been out using his whip, and said he would not bring it out again. The officer also warned the man for a considerable amount of refuse he left lying around, and asked him to clean up his things so the officer would not have to whip up a bylaw ticket. The man agreed.
