Welcome to the Mission RCMP Community Connection for the week of January 15 - 21, 2024

Here’s a snapshot of some of the work we did last week:

Photo of stolen Ford Focus

Sometime in the overnight hours of January 18-19, a grey Ford Focus sedan was left on Hawthorne Avenue near Judith Street. The vehicle was called in as a suspicious vehicle by a local resident, as he did not recognize the vehicle from the neighbourhood, the front bumper was missing, and one of the windows was shattered. An officer attended and confirmed that the vehicle was stolen. The vehicle was seized for further investigation. Anyone who saw a Ford Focus missing a front bumper around Mission that night, or saw anyone around the vehicle on Hawthorne Avenue is asked to call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161.

Shortly after 7pm on January 15, a pedestrian was struck in the 7600 block of Blott Street. The 50 year-old male had reportedly walked into traffic and was wearing dark clothing when he was hit. The driver remained at scene and is cooperating with the investigation. At this time, there is no indication that speed was a factor or that the driver was impaired or distracted. The pedestrian was transported to hospital, but fortunately he did not suffer any serious injuries.

On the evening of January 17, Mission RCMP received multiple complaints of trucks driving recklessly and sliding around in a snowy parking lot on London Avenue. Officers attended and observed several trucks accelerating and spinning around in the parking lot, while customers from other businesses were still in the area, causing a potentially dangerous situation. Three trucks were impounded for stunting, and drivers aged 18, 32 and 59 received violation tickets. Drivers are reminded that the Motor Vehicle Act applies in public parking lots, and that doing doughnuts or other forms of stunt driving leads to an automatic 7-day impound.

On the evening of January 18, Mission RCMP received a request from paramedics to attend an address on Hillcrest Avenue, where they had been called for a medical issue. While there, first responders came across a quantity of ammunition. Further investigation led to the discovery of a loaded handgun inside the residence, which had been stolen years earlier. The gun and ammunition were seized, and the investigation is ongoing.

A disturbance was reported at the Mission Sikh Temple around 3:30 pm on January 21, after a man entered the temple, refused to remove his shoes, and made threats toward others when confronted. Mission RCMP located the man outside in his vehicle. He was arrested for uttering threats and mischief, and removed from the property. The investigation is ongoing.

On the afternoon of January 22, a two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of the Cedar Valley Connector and Lougheed Highway. A grey Honda Civic rear-ended a Volkswagen Atlas, which had been stopped at a red light. When an officer spoke with the driver of the Civic, he noticed a strong odour of liquor from the man’s breath, and another witness also reported the vehicle had been driving erratically prior to the collision. The driver failed a roadside screening test, and was transported to the Mission RCMP detachment, where he provided breath samples well above the legal limit. The man was issued a 90-day administrative driving prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
