On average, 77 people die every year in crashes related with distracted driving according to ICBC. Twenty-nine percent of all fatal collisions is related to distracted driving. Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Team uses HAZE and HVE to focus enforcement in an effort to reduce harm caused by unlawful behaviour, such as distracted driving.
Of the 582 violation tickets issued within HAZE, 79 were along Como Lake Avenue and Fowler, 102 were around Lougheed Highway and Shaughnessy Street and 172 were at Pinetree Way and Lougheed Highway. Police continue to see an increase of unlawful driving behaviour along the Maryhill Bypass and Coast Meridian area; issuing 229 violation tickets in these areas.
March madness was strong this month with over 500 violation tickets issued in our HAZE areas,
said Staff Sergeant Mark McCutcheon, Coquitlam RCMP’s Traffic Services Commander. It’s a little disappointing to be issuing this many tickets, as distracted driving laws were enacted in 2009 and we would like to think that people are getting the message to leave their phones alone.
Police continue to urge drivers to leave their phones along and focus on the road. Distracted driving includes more than just cellphone use as it encompassing all things that impact a driver’s ability to focus on the road. The violation fines for distracted driving can also be costly, such as:
- Using an Electronic Device is $368 and 4 penalty points for a first offence;
- Driving without Due Care is $368 and 6 penalty points
