As the warm weather approaches, the Elk Valley and area RCMP Detachment wants to remind the public to stay alert and safe while walking alone.
Walking alone can be a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re walking to your car after a late-night shift or taking a leisurely stroll in the park, it’s important to take necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
Firstly, it’s crucial to plan your route and avoid isolated areas. Stick to well-lit, busy streets and avoid shortcuts through alleys or parks, especially at night. If possible, walk with a friend or in a group.
Another way to stay safe while walking alone is to let someone know your whereabouts. Share your route and estimated time of arrival with a friend or family member, and check-in with them once you reach your destination. This way, they can raise an alarm if you do not arrive as planned.
Additionally, it’s crucial to avoid wearing headphones or earbuds while walking alone, as they can prevent you from hearing approaching danger. If you must listen to music, keep one earbud out and the volume low.
Personal safety tips:
- Walk with a purpose, and keep your head up
- Plan your route
- Wear reflective clothing
- Use busy, well-lit paths
- Walk with a friend or group
- Notify someone you’ll be walking alone
Walking alone can be a safe and enjoyable experience. Always be aware of your surroundings, plan your route, avoid isolated areas, and let someone know your whereabouts, avoid distractions, and trust your instincts,
says Cpl. James Grandy. By doing so, you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime and enjoy your walk with peace of mind.
