On Monday November 1, at the direction of Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue Search Manager, members of the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) completed a 1 day search in the Granite Mainline area between two encampments where Kearny is believed to have been walking. This search included down the banks on each side of the trail.

During this exhaustive all day search, members of the ERT team were assisted by the use of a drone, and a police dog states Sergeant Kevin Shaw, Operations NCO for Sooke RCMP. The Sooke Detachment has taken conduct over the investigation into Mr. Kearney’s disappearance, and anyone with first-hand information is urged to call us

The search was challenged by both weather, terrain, and safety concerns identified by Emergency Management BC. We overcame all those things with the ERT search guided by SAR, and completed it yesterday. In consultation with SAR and ERT searchers there are no more search areas identified, and currently no plans to return for the purpose of a coordinated search. Shaw added.

Search and rescue volunteers were called upon for the initial October 21 search for Kearny, however at the recommendation of EMBC, no further volunteers were recommended for the November 1 search, which is why RCMP ERT members were used.

To date, numerous investigational avenues have been explored, including remaining in frequent contact with the Victoria Police Department, where Gerald Kearney was known to live alone on a boat. A backpack belonging to Kearney was found in the area earlier in the investigation, but investigators still need to talk to anyone who spoke with him on or around the day he was last seen, October 13.

Anyone with information on Gerald Kearney’s disappearance is asked to call the Sooke RCMP at 250-642-5241
