Nanaimo file # 2023- 31010 Theft of custom bike rack

Sometime on Monday Sept 4, a custom designed bike rake was stolen from the yard of a home in the 3700 block of Long Lake Road. The rack is designed to carry 6 bikes and attaches to a trailer hitch.

Nanaimo file # 2023- 31179 Theft of E-bike

At approximately 4 PM on Tuesday September 5, 2023, a bike was stolen from in front of the Canco gas bar located at 1050 Terminal Ave. The owner of the bike told police she bike was not locked when she went into the store. She said she was in the store for no more than two minutes. When she returned, the bike was gone. Surveillance cameras showed an Asian man dressed in black riding southbound on the bike down Terminal Ave. The stolen bike is an electric Raev Bullet GT. One battery was attached and an after-market bell was installed on the frame.

Nanaimo file # 2023-31200 Theft of merchandise

At approximately 6 PM on Tuesday September 5, 2023, police responded to a theft in progress at HomeSense located at 6950 Island Highway North. Employees reported that a woman had loaded up a cart with at least $3000 in stolen items and was leaving the store. Before police could arrive, it appears the woman had a moment of clarity and ditched the cart and items, then fled empty handed. The suspect was described as Caucasian, wearing a black sweater, black leggings and red hair. Patrols of the area proved negative.

Nanaimo file # 2023-31174 MVI with injuries

At approximately 4 :10 AM on Sept 5, 2023, Police, Fire and BCEHS responded to a report of a single vehicle collision in central Nanaimo involving 4 sixteen year old youths. Police attended and located an older model vehicle with significant front-end damage. Air bags had deployed and all onboard, while traumatized, appeared to be relatively unscathed. The driver displayed symptoms of alcohol consumption and provided a breath sample, which showed that he had consumed alcohol, contrary to his driving conditions. Three of the four youths were picked up a short time later by some very concerned parents. One youth(passenger) was taken to hospital for treatment of a minor upper injury. Note: Booze and inexperienced drivers do not mix. The zero-alcohol limit is there for a reason.

Nanaimo file # 2023-31488 Disturbance

At approximately 5:30 AM on Sept 8, 2023, police responded to a report of man yelling, screaming and banging on car windows outside MacDonald’s in the north end. Officers responded and located a man sitting on the curb hanging his head. The office managed to engage him in conversation. The individual told the officer that he had not slept in 3 days, he was not doing so well and was desperately looking for a coffee and a safe injection kit. The officer offered him a bottle of water and a ride downtown to which he declined. He apologized for his actions and said that he would take the bus and leave the area.

Nanaimo file # 2023-31503 Youth with firearm

At approximately 10 AM on Sept 8, police responded to a report of a youth seen near the Parkway in North Nanaimo, with a firearm pointed at himself. When police arrived, they found the individual speaking with several people who happened to be walking by. Officers located the reported rifle which was determined to be a revolver style cap gun. The officers searched his backpack and found a loaded rifle magazine but no rifle was found. The young man admitted to having a very difficult time. Officers apprehended him under the Mental Health Act and transported to the Nanaimo hospital for a mental health assessment. His mother, who resides out of province, was contacted and said that she would be catching a flight the next day to be with her son.
