Welcome to Bella Coola sign

The Bella Coola RCMP responded to a report of a hiker whom had fallen off a cliff at the Petroglyphs Trail network near the 4 Mile Subdivision, approximately 4 kilometers east of Bella Coola.

On June 19th 2023, at approximately 2:45 pm., police were advised of an injured person within the trail network. Front line officers located the male in heavily dense brush, he was being attended to by his partner and appeared to have suffered serious injuries after falling approximately 30 meters. Bella Coola SAR (BCVSAR), local Nuxalk Guardian's and EHS were requested and soon arrived on scene to assist.

Police rendered first aid while the Nuxalk Guardians and local community members assisted with cutting in a trail which allowed BCVSAR access. The male was quickly loaded into a basket stretcher and with the assistance of everyone on scene was walked out to a waiting Ambulance. The male was taken to the Bella Coola Hospital where staff worked tirelessly to stabilize him in order to be transported to a larger center.

"It was definitely a team effort, within a short amount of time there were about 50 people on scene, all there to help out a community member in need." said Sargent Trevor Romanchych, Bella Coola RCMP Detachment Commander. "Bella Coola is a small place without many resources, you rely on each other and this is a perfect example of the sprit a small community has."

The Injured hiker is currently receiving treatment in a larger center.
