Arrests made in delivery truck carjacking

Shortly before 12:30 p.m. on August 13, 2023, Richmond RCMP frontline officers responded to the 5600 block of Cooney Road after a delivery driver reportedly had his van taken at gunpoint by two masked suspects. The driver was unhurt. The van was last seen heading eastbound on Westminster Hwy.

A broadcast was disseminated to neighboring police agencies. Agencies answering the call for assistance included Delta Police Department, Surrey RCMP, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, and LMD Integrated Police Dog Services.

The van was equipped with GPS tracking, which is standard for most delivery vehicles. It was located on Highway 91 heading toward the Alex Fraser Bridge and followed into Surrey.

A 29-year old man was arrested in the 7000 block of 149A Street in Surrey. The delivery van was also recovered and towed to Richmond Detachment for processing.

A second suspect, a 27-year old man, later turned himself into Surrey RCMP. Both suspects are being held in custody for court.

This incident is a testament to the Richmond Detachment police officers and their commitment to maintaining a safe community here in Richmond. Furthermore, it highlights the willingness of our neighbouring law enforcement agencies to assist at a moment’s notice and work together to arrest those responsible says Staff Sergeant Simon Lee, C Watch Commander, Richmond RCMP.
