Dog owner being mercilessly harassed over unfounded claim of animal cruelty

Richmond RCMP are cautioning the public to leave Hugo and his owner alone.

Since June 19, 2023 Richmond RCMP have responded to multiple calls at a residence since a poster was put up around the City alleging a dog, Hugo, was being abused. Theses allegations have been thoroughly investigated and determined to be unfounded. Despite confirmation of Hugo’s well-being from Richmond RCMP, the City of Richmond and the BC SPCA, people are continuing to attend the owner’s residence to check on Hugo.

Richmond RCMP are actively investigating a mischief to the residence. As a result of the constant harassment of the resident, Richmond RCMP placed officers outside of the residence to preserve public safety and inform the public that the dog abuse allegations are unfounded.

Our officers observed a steady stream of people coming by, some of whom were aggressive and confrontational with police, says Corporal Adriana O’Malley, Richmond RCMP Media Relations Officers, We need the public to understand that Hugo is fine and not encountering any abuse.

Richmond RCMP will continue to maintain a high presence at this residence and will fully investigate any public disobedience or criminal behaviour.

The City of Richmond and BC SPCA conducted a timely and thorough investigation of the allegations and determined the complaint to be unfounded. It appears that someone made a concerted effort to publicize allegations of animal cruelty by posting signage on City property. Again, those allegations were found to be false. The City and BCSPCA take complaints of animal cruelty extremely seriously. Should anyone have concerns or complaints about lost, wandering or aggressive animals, barking, nuisance or neglected animals in Richmond, they should call the BCSPCA at 604-709-4668.
