File # 2022-13121

On May 31, 2022, at 6:10 a.m., North Vancouver RCMP responded to a report of a structure fire at 1335 East 27th Street in North Vancouver, known as Silverlynn Apartments. District of North Vancouver Fire Rescue Service were already on scene. Flames and smoke were seen coming from the three-story structure, and firefighters quickly brought the fire under control.

"We are very saddened to report that one person has died as a result of the fire," said Sgt. Peter DeVries of the North Vancouver RCMP. "Despite the heroic efforts of firefighters and other first responders, we are sadly now in the early stages of an investigation, in partnership with BC Coroners Service, into the death of one person." DeVries said the investigation will determine if any criminality was involved.

Comprehensive efforts to evacuate residents of the building were undertaken by first responders at the scene, said DeVries. As the fire was being extinguished, North Shore Emergency Management (NSEM) activated their Emergency Support Services (ESS) program, which provides 72 hours of shelter, clothing and food for those displaced due to fire or other disasters. North Vancouver RCMP’s Victim Services/Crisis Intervention Team has also been called to the scene to provide support.

"There are approximately 70 residents who have been displaced," said DeVries. "North Shore Emergency Management has informed us those residents are currently being registered in the ESS program, and will be housed and provided care and support as the afternoon unfolds." North Shore Emergency Management (NSEM) is an inter-municipal agency that provides emergency management services for the City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, and District of West Vancouver.

"This is truly a tragedy," said DeVries. "Thankfully, this community has excellent supports in place to take care of those affected by this fire. But our hearts go out today especially to the family and friends of the person who lost their life."

The identity of the person who died is not being released as next of kin notification has not been completed.
