File # 2022-32963

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is looking for more information related to a theft and weapons report involving a suspect with a blue Mohawk on Fortune Drive recently.

On Sept. 15, 2022, around 4:45 p.m., police were called to a store on the 800-block of Fortune Drive for a report of a man who was stealing product, and when confronted by staff outside, allegedly produced a can of suspected bear spray and a knife. The suspect fled southbound on Tranquille Road, throwing the knife away as he did. He was described as having a blue Mohawk and orange shirt.

The Kamloops RCMP takes these reports very seriously, especially when a weapon is involved, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. In this case, a number of other high-priority events also required the presence of police officers. Shortly after the report was received, dispatch was advised that the employee had returned to the store and was uninjured. This information reduced the risk to safety and calls for service continued to be triaged for dispatch based on their priority and risk.

An officer was dispatched at approximately 6 p.m. on Sept. 15, and attended as soon as the report was received.

Information published in a recent media article suggested that police did not attend the scene until a week later on Sept. 23.

In the interest of public safely, police encourage residents and store employees not to pursue suspects, especially when a weapon is presented. Instead, the public is requested to please take good notes, photos if possible, and obtain any details that could help police identify a suspect.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Although officers are confident they have identified a suspect, they are still gathering evidence as part of the arrest and charge recommendation process.

Anyone who has video surveillance from the area, witnessed, or has any information related to this investigation is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2022-32963.
