Burnaby RCMP is teaming up with BCAA and Richmond RCMP to educate the public on child passenger safety, with officers available to help families ensure their child car seats and booster seats are properly installed.

The initiative will take place at Metrotown in Burnaby between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Burnaby RCMP is asking people to pre-book appointments online. If you are interested, please send an email here.

People with appointments will be able to have their car and booster seat set-up checked by certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Educators, including RCMP officers from Burnaby and Richmond, who will work with attendees to offer personalized education, guidance, and feedback.

We are encouraging families to bring their current car or booster seat as well as their children to their pre-booked appointment. This will allow officers to check that the seat is installed correctly with the child properly seated and strapped in. It will also allow us to ensure the current car seat or booster seat is the correct one for the child, said Cst. Kevin Connolly with Burnaby RCMP’s Traffic Unit.

For a child car seat or booster seat to be effective, it must be installed correctly.

Officers will be able to identify safety issues during these appointments, and can also help families choose another appropriate car or booster seat option and assist with installation and education if necessary.

Car and booster seats are an important part of road safety, protecting vulnerable children, and the new school year is a perfect time to ensure the car seat and booster seat in your vehicle is properly installed, as they can be complicated to set up, Connolly added. We are looking forward to bringing this safety initiative to Burnaby for the first time.
