Continued Enforcement for CounterAttack Impaired Driving Month

December is CounterAttack Impaired Driving month in B.C. and the Prince George RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit has continued its enforcement efforts in the lead-up to Christmas weekend. Impaired driving enforcement is a national priority and to support this the Prince George RCMP allocates increased resources in their effort to keep impaired drivers off the road.

Police conducted roving checks at multiple locations in Prince George between Thursday, December 17, 2020 and Monday, December 21, 2020.

As a result of this enforcement, the following Motor Vehicle Act violations were issued:

• 9-90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions
• 1-3 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition
• 11-Vehicle Impoundments
• 2-24 hour Provincial Driving Prohibitions for alcohol
• 1-12 hour Provincial Roadside Suspension for alcohol

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions on our roads. According to ICBC, in British Columbia an average of 67 people each year are fatal victims in crashes where alcohol, drugs or medication was a contributing factor (5 year average between 2015 and 2019).

Although the dynamic of traffic enforcement has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the fact is impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions on our roads, says Sergeant Kyle Ushock, head of Prince George RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit.

If you witness an impaired person get behind the wheel of a vehicle or witness a possibly impaired driver on our roads, please immediately call 9-1-1. Your efforts to contact police may save a life.
