File # IHIT File # 2023-523

Background:

On April 11, 2023 at 9:23 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a young man suffering from life-threatening injuries resulting from a stabbing in the 9900-block of King George Boulevard. Surrey RCMP officers responded along with the BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) and emergency first aid was provided. Sadly, the 17-year-old victim died as a result of his injuries shortly after being transported to hospital.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and worked in close partnership with the Surrey RCMP Detachment, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) to advance the investigation.

On April 16, 2023, with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (LMD IERT), IHIT officers located and arrested 20-year old Kaiden Mintenko in relation to the homicide.

On April 17, 2023, the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) laid a charge of second-degree murder against Mr. Mintenko, who remained in custody. His trial commenced on December 2, 2024 in BC Supreme Court, at New Westminster Law Courts, before Justice Schultes.

Update:

On March 20, 2025, Mr. Mintenko was found guilty of manslaughter.

This outcome is the result of collaborative efforts between IHIT, our policing partners and the BC Prosecution Service, says Sgt Freda Fong of IHIT.

More importantly, this conviction was made possible by a number of witnesses who cooperated with the police and testified in court. We thank them for doing the right thing and for taking the time to see this case through to the end.

The matter is next in court on April 10, 2025 to schedule a date for the sentencing hearing.
