The Burnaby RCMP is pleased to announce that the detachment’s Bike Unit is now patrolling the streets, alleys, and trails of Burnaby on electric bikes, significantly increasing the distance and variety of terrain the team is covering while on duty.

Thanks to funding from the City of Burnaby, and support from The City’s Public Safety Committee, the detachment secured four E-bikes in late October. Since then, the detachment’s bike team has been putting them to the test across the city.

Insp. Peri Mainwaring, Burnaby RCMP Community Programs:

We’re able to get to calls much faster.

We’re able to be more nimble, pivot and when we hear something on the radio officers are responding right away and able to get there.

The officers are not as tired at the end of the day, they’re able to stay out on the road longer and patrol longer hours.

Cst. Wyndham Fraser, Burnaby RCMP Bike Unit:

Now with the E-bikes we could patrol out here for two hours and not even feel fatigue.

With the e-bikes we do patrols areas people don’t expect us to be.

We’re actually visible in the whole community now, so there’s no restrictions within Burnaby that the E-bikes will not allow us to go.

That’s one of the advantages of having E-bikes.

We have been able to patrol new areas that would usually be really difficult for us on traditional bikes, said Cst. Wyndham Fraser, Acting Supervisor of the Burnaby Bike Unit. Places with steep inclines such as Capitol Hill and SFU are now much more accessible for us. We are covering more distance and terrain with less recovery time for our officers. We have also started patrols in areas we didn’t ever think would be possible on bikes. It’s an exciting new chapter for us.

The Trek E-bikes are custom models made for police which cost just under $6,000 each.

Six police officers wearing various uniforms stand on a grassy area with mountains in the background. Three of the officers have E-bikes in front of them. Two police officers in reflective jacket stand with E-Bikes in front of them and mountains in the background

We are really excited about how these E-bikes are modernizing our Bike Unit and would like to acknowledge the City of Burnaby for making it possible, said Insp. Peri Mainwaring, Burnaby RCMP’s Community Programs Officer. It’s a game changer for this team, including their response time and their visibility in our community.

One of the many benefits of patrolling on bikes is being able to access spaces hard to reach by vehicle, including trails, alcoves, stairwells and parkades. With the new E-bikes, the team’s range in a day is now nearly unlimited, Cst. Fraser says.

People love seeing us on these bikes in their neighbourhoods, so it’s amazing to be covering more of our city every day, Cst. Fraser added. Every conversation we have is really positive. People recognize that this is good for the city.

In addition to patrols, Bike Unit members are also involved in community engagement, safety presentations, crime prevention as well as traffic enforcement in school zones. The unit also works closely with units such as the Community Response Team, the Police Mental Health Outreach Team, Youth Section, and General Duty.
