Island District RCMP awards ceremonies to recognize officers and civilians

The RCMP on Vancouver Island recently held two ceremonies in recognition of men and women of the RCMP as well as civilians who have performed their duties in a manner which is truly above and beyond
. Those ceremonies took place on October 17, 2024 in Courtenay and on October 24, in Victoria.
In total, 49 individuals were recognized and provided with an award by the Vancouver Island RCMP District Officer, Chief Superintendent Shawna Baher.
The awards ceremonies included:
- Long Service Medals: awarded to recipients who have spent 20, 25, 30 and 35 years as police officers, civilian members and public service employees in the service of the RCMP and their country.
- Saint John’s Lifesaving awards: awarded to recipients who have administered first aid in saving or attempting to save a life. St. John live-saving award is a non-RCMP award and facilitated by the St. John live-saving society.
- Officer in Charge Certificate of Appreciation: awarded to recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to high standards of service to the community, showcasing dedication and the values of the RCMP.
- District Officer Certificate of Appreciation: awarded to recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to service and community beyond the normal scope of a person’s regular duties. This certificate is awarded to all categories of employees, private citizens or organizations.
- Commanding Officer’s Certificate of Appreciation: similar to the District Officer’s Certificate of Appreciation but at the Commanding Officer’s level.
- Commanding Officer’s Unit Commendation: awarded to a unit service which impacted an investigation at a provincial or regional level.
- Commanding Officer’s Commendation: awarded to recipients, all categories of employees and private civilians for acts of bravery or outstanding service which impacted a provincial or regional level.
We not only recognized the remarkable individual accomplishments of those receiving awards, but we also take this opportunity to reflect on the unwavering resilience, commitment, and teamwork that bind us together, explained C/Supt. Shawna Baher during the presentation.
C/Supt Baher also ensured to address the troop directly: Remember, every call, every interaction, and every action you take has the potential to be a turning point in someone’s life, even if you don’t realize it in the moment she added.
