BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of an incident in Penticton

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Penticton where one man has died.

On October 22, 2024, at approximately 3:13 p.m., Penticton RCMP received multiple 9-1-1 calls of a man acting erratically and reportedly waving a knife around on Government Street in Penticton.

Officers attended and an interaction occurred between one officer and the suspect resulting in the officer discharging their duty pistol. The man was provided immediate first aid before being taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries however later died.

The officer was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been release. There were no other reported injuries.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions into the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
