The Comox Valley RCMP is urging the public to be aware of a concerning rise in sextortion scams, particularly targeting men and young boys.

These scams typically start with victims being approached over social media by fake accounts posing as attractive women. What begins as seemingly harmless messaging can quickly turn into a nightmare. The process is simple, but devastating: after convincing the victim to perform sexual acts on camera or send nude photos, scammers use the footage to extort money.

To make the threats more frightening, scammers will often include screenshots of the victim’s contacts or personal details – such as school or home addresses – making it clear they mean business.

These scammers are ruthless, said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP. And make no mistake, sextortion can happen to anyone, regardless of their age or gender. Scammers prey on fear and shame, and that’s why it’s so important to report these crimes rather than suffer in silence.

What To Do If You’re Targeted:

  1. Stop Communication Immediately: Deactivate (but don’t delete) the accounts you used to communicate with the scammer.
  2. Do Not Pay or Send More Photos: Sending money or additional images will only make things worse.
  3. Check Payments: If money has been sent but not collected, cancel it right away.
  4. Save Everything: Keep all communications, usernames, account details, and images or videos as evidence.
  5. Talk About It: Speak with a trusted adult, friend, or counsellor. You’re not alone.
  6. Make a Police Report: It’s the bravest thing you can do.
