Police warn of fake gold scams

Coquitlam RCMP is reminding the public to be aware of fake gold and jewelry scams.

Coquitlam RCMP are investigating recent fraud reports involving a fake gold scam. In these incidents, the suspects approached the victim in a parking lot and asked the victim for money. When the victim said no, the suspects offering to sell gold jewelry in exchange for money.

The suspects in these scams can be very persuasive, and often use stories to play on the victim’s compassion, said Media Relations Officer, Corporal Alexa Hodgins. These fake gold scams occur throughout our communities and we want to prevent further victimization by bringing awareness to the scam.

In one incidence, the victim provided the suspects with $200 in exchange for jewelry which was later to be determined as fake.

We recognize that many of the incidents go unreported, as the victims are often embarrassed that they fell victim to the scam, said Corporal Alexa Hodgins. We want to remind the public that they should report these incidents to police. Accurate and timely information aids in Police investigations while allowing our agency to focus resources where they may have the most impact on public safety.
