Message from the Officer in Charge
I am pleased to present you with the Surrey RCMP’s 2023 Report to the Community. I would like to begin by acknowledging the traditional territories of the Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen First Nations for where the Surrey RCMP provides policing services in the city.
2023 was a challenging year for the Surrey RCMP with an unprecedented 209,000 calls for service. I say unprecedented as the population in the city continues to grow exponentially yet the detachment has not increased in staffing levels since 2018 due to the Surrey Policing Transition. There have been many shifts, twists and turns in this continuing saga of how the City of Surrey will contract its policing services.
However, in the midst of the many phases and discussions, the police officers and support staff of the Surrey RCMP, Surrey Police Service and the City of Surrey have demonstrated immense professionalism in the face of this adversity to maintain public safety. Extensive work and planning will continue as we await the next phase of this complex project.
One of the most notable accomplishments for 2023 has been the substantial reduction in crime rates across the city. 2023 marks the 12th consecutive year in which we are reporting sizeable reductions in crime. Through the dedicated efforts of our officers, strategic deployment of resources and the implementation of innovative crime prevention and targeted enforcement strategies, we have seen a 50% reduction in homicides, a 5% reduction in property crimes and a 23% in drug-related offenses when compared to the previous year. These statistics are not just numbers; they represent a safer community for our residents and businesses.
This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the support and collaboration from our community. Our partnerships with the local schools, businesses, neighbourhood associations, faith-based organizations and residents have been instrumental in working together to target crime. We hope to continue our engagement and outreach to foster trust and open communication allowing us to address your concerns proactively.
As I look ahead, the Surrey RCMP remains committed to serving the residents and businesses of Surrey with integrity, fairness and respect. I recognize there is always more which can be done, and I am committed to continuous improvement. We will focus on further strengthening community partnerships, expanding outreach efforts and advancing innovations to address emerging challenges. Thank you for your support and trust in the Surrey RCMP.
I extend my deepest gratitude to the police officers and municipal support staff for their steadfast dedication and hard work. Together we will build on last year’s success and work towards an ever safer and more connected community.
Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards
Officer-in-Charge, Surrey RCMP Detachment
