On July 7, 2024 at approximately 10:30 p.m. West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit was conducting speed enforcement on Veterans Memorial Parkway near Cairndale Road in Colwood when a Dodge Ram passed the police vehicle at a very high rate of speed.

The police laser indicated that the vehicle was travelling at 132 km/hr in 60 km/hr zone, 72 km/hr over the posted speed limit. Upon being pulled over, the 37-year-old male driver displayed signs of possible impairment by alcohol and was directed to provide breath samples into an approved roadside screening device. The driver provided two fail samples, confirming the driver to be over the legal limit of alcohol.

The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and the driver issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act along with a $483 violation ticket for excessive speeding. The driver is also responsible for all towing and impound costs.

In B.C. the Motor Vehicle Act defines excessive speeding as driving at a speed greater than 40 km an hour over the speed limit. If caught, you may be ticketed and your vehicle towed and impounded for a minimum of 7 days for first time offenders and 30 days for repeat offenders. If you exceed the limit by more than 40km an hour, you’ll be fined $368 and if exceeding the limit by more 60km an hour, you’ll be fined $483. You will also have three penalty points added to your driving record.
