Welcome to the Mission RCMP Community Connection for May 27 – June 2, 2024

Here’s a snapshot of some of the work we did that week:

Photo of stolen welder

Sometime over the weekend of May 25-26, a large Lincoln Vantage welder on a trailer was stolen from a construction site on Lougheed Highway near Hawkins Pickle Road. Mission RCMP subsequently learned that the welder had been taken to a rural property on Holly Road in Agassiz. Due to various officer-safety concerns, the Emergency Response Team was tasked with executing a search warrant at the property on May 28, however the welder was no longer there. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to call Mission RCMP, at 604-826-7161. File 24-6034.

A possible impaired driver was reportedly stopped on the train tracks on London Avenue in Mission around 2:30 am on May 29. Officers attended and located the vehicle, which had since relocated to nearby Beatty Drive. The driver exhibited signs of being impaired by drugs, and performed poorly on a series of roadside sobriety tests. He was issued a driving prohibition, and his vehicle was towed.

Mission RCMP received two reports of sextortion attempts last week. These types of circumstances can be very difficult to investigate, as the suspects are often based in other countries. Parents are encouraged to have regular discussions with their children about online safety, and to let their children know what to do if they are targeted by a scammer. Any incidents of sextortion should be reported to police immediately. Sextortion scams often involve coercing someone into sending an intimate image of themselves to someone online, at which time the scammer then demands money or more photos, against the threat of releasing the intimate image on social media or sending it to their contacts. Staff from a grocery store in Mission called police on the evening of May 28, after an intoxicated male began causing a disturbance. RCMP attended and observed the man trying to start a fight with staff and security. The man was reportedly upset because only two check-outs were open. The man was arrested and was provided access to Mission RCMP’s express check-in service, so he would not have to spend anymore time waiting in line. He even received a complimentary plastic bag for his effects during his overnight stay.
