Tips to help protect yourself against crimes listed above:
Home security:
- Lock your doors and windows.
- Learn about Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design on Coquitlam.RCMP.ca
- Wait for the gate.
- When entering/ leaving underground parking garages, wait for the automatic gate to close before proceeding.
Automobile security:
- Lock your doors and roll up your windows.
- Park in well-lit/well-populated areas where "natural surveillance" can serve as a deterrent.
- Close garage doors at night.
- Take your garage opener, house/business keys and vehicle registration papers out of your vehicle when it’s parked. If thieves stole these items, they could use them to commit other crimes including identity theft and break & enter
Business security:
- Install a security system and learn how to use it.
- Train employees to recognize suspicious and criminal activity, how to respond safely and report to police.
- Don’t let your windows get covered up with ads and posters. The inside of your business should be visible from the street.
- Invest in quality exterior doors and locks. Exterior doors should be solid-core and secured by at least one deadbolt with a minimum 1 throw (throw is the part that extends into the door frame when locked).
