If you know any good dog names that start with ‘S’, here’s your chance to help the RCMP with its 2023 batch of puppies.

The Kamloops RCMP dog handlers are calling on the city’s youth to help name the force’s newest police dog cadets. Until March 16, youngsters age four to 14 are encouraged to enter the RCMP’s ‘2023 Name the Puppy Contest’ to help find names for 13 new German shepherd puppies – any one of which could end up policing Kamloops someday.

A new letter is selected each year to start the names. For 2023, all the names must begin with the letter S. The RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) in Innisfail, Alberta, is looking for original and creative names that these dogs can wear with pride during their career serving Canadian communities.

In 2019, a student from Rayleigh was one of 13 winners after his suggested name of ‘Marlow’ was chosen, said Corporal Steve Prior, a Kamloops RCMP dog handler.

Cpl. Prior’s current police dog partner is Neeka.

All contest entries must be submitted using the online form. Contest winners and the winning names will be announced on April 6, 2023, on the RCMP website and social media.
